Created at the end of the 18th century by the Duc de Chartres, next Duc d’Orleans who asked Carmontelle, a draughtsman and theater-man, to the lay-out dreamt up picturesque scenery filled with pyramids, pagodas, roman temples and medieval ruins. This garen was called the ? folie de Chartres ?. In 1861, Alphand opened up part of it as an English-style public garden.The rotunda, the oval-shaped basin and the columnade from the uncompleted tomb of Henri II in Saint-Denis are not to be missed.
